3. Brief description of product

Maersk Group also known as Maersk (Danish: Mærsk), is a Danish business conglomerate. A.P. Moller – Maersk Group has activities in a variety of business sectors, primarily within the transportation and energy sectors. It is the largest container ship operator and supply vessel operator in the world since 1996. Maersk Group is based in Copenhagen, Denmark, with subsidiaries and offices in more than 135 countries worldwide and around 108,000 employees. It ranked 147 on the Fortune Global 500 list for 2010, down from 106 in 2009.

4. A profile of the Entrepreneur and the business.

Shipowner A.P. Møller was born in 1876 into a family with many relations to the sea and to shipping. In 1895, A.P. Møller started as a trainee with two of his father’s business contacts in Newcastle, England. Two years later he moved to the East Prussian city of Königsberg – today Kaliningrad – and later to St. Petersburg, working within exports and shipbroking.
In February 1904, A.P. Møller returned to Denmark to take up the post as manager of the chartering department of C.K. Hansen, one of the major shipping and brokerage firms in Copenhagen of that time.
In April 1904, at the age of 28, A. P. Møller established, together with his father, Captain Peter Mærsk Møller, A/S Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg (the Steamship Company Svendborg) and bought a second-hand vessel, which was renamed SVENDBORG. The company had its first office in A.P. Møller’s childhood home “Villa Anna” in Svendborg. Shipowner A.P. Møller retained his job with C.K. Hansen while slowly building up the new business.

5. A brief introduction of how the business started.

The beginnings of the A.P. Møller-Mærsk Group was the shipping company Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg, founded by captain Peter Mærsk-Møller and his son Arnold Peter Møller (2 October 1876 - June 1965) in Svendborg, 1904. A.P. Møller had four children, one of whom was Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller (born 13 July 1913). In 1939, he became a partner in the company. Following the death of A.P. Møller in June 1965, Mc-Kinney Møller became CEO of the company and held this post until 1993, when he was succeeded by Jess Søderberg. Beginning in 1965, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller also served as company chairman and did not relinquish this position until December 2003 (when he was 90 years old). He is still one of the "managing owners" of the company and was chairman of Odense Steel Shipyard until 2 May 2006.

6. How the business gained success

In 1983, the U.S. Marine Corps needed to pre-position overseas a large amount of vital equipment such as combat vehicles, ammunition and supplies, but lacked the assets to do so. Maersk Line, Limited (MLL) proposed to convert five of its commercial containerships into roll-on, roll-off vessels for that mission. These ships were in active service in prepositioning support for the U.S. Department of Defense and saw action in all major conflicts between the mid-1980s and 2009, delivering support wherever needed around the world. MLL was a key player in the validation of the prepositioning concept by U.S. Marine Corps active participation in Operation DESERT STORM. MLL was responsible for the maintenance, preservation and repair of Naval Support Element (NSE) lighterage/JLOTS equipment on MPS vessels in Diego Garcia, Guam, and Saipan and maintained this equipment on behalf of MSC for approximately ten years without a single major deficiency.
